When I retire can I keep my computing account / username / email address or access the Internet from IT Services PCs?

The university does not normally offer computing facilities to retired staff, except for those who still have a current role within the university, like emeritus professors.

So when you retire  your computing account will be closed, along with your email address, and you will not be able to login to IT Services PCs.

Closing your account is an automatic process, triggered by Human Resources, but you will get 7 days warning, by email, before your account is closed.  This will give you time to copy any files and mail messages that you wish to keep.

(Staff who retired before 1999 were offered the option to keep their computing account, but in January 1999 that changed.

This followed a request from a retired member of staff for a personal Web page. It was decided that no Web page should be provided, and subsequently that the same arguments which led to that conclusion should lead to non-provision of email as well, and then to the non availability of any IT Services at all for retired staff. This was primarily on grounds of absence of spare capacity, and secondarily the impossibility of taking responsibility for content.

Facilities provided to staff who had already retired before January 1999 will be maintained.)
